How do you protect your Booking.com and Airbnb accounts? Essential security guide for property owners

In the digital age, account security is no longer just a recommendation but a responsibility. A compromised Booking.com or Airbnb account can mean lost bookings, unauthorized changes, access to sensitive data, and even financial damages.

For this reason, SHINE by LG recommends following some simple yet extremely effective measures that contribute to protecting your property and your accounts.

1. Avoid public Wi-Fi networks

When accessing the Pulse app, the Booking.com Extranet, or the Airbnb platform, avoid connecting to public Wi-Fi networks.

Networks available in restaurants, cafes, hotels, airports, train stations, or shopping malls are used simultaneously by a large number of people and can pose additional risks if not properly managed.

SHINE by LG recommendation

✔ Use your mobile data connection.

✔ Or create a personal hotspot from your phone and connect your laptop or tablet to it.

A private connection significantly reduces exposure to certain types of network attacks.

2. Periodically update your account password

The password is the first line of defense against unauthorized access.

If you have been using the same password for a long time, it is advisable to change it periodically.

Depending on internal policy and risk level, it can be updated every 3–6 months or whenever there are suspicions regarding account security. Regardless of the situation, avoid using the same password across multiple platforms.

A secure password should contain:

  • at least 12 characters;

  • uppercase and lowercase letters;

  • numbers;

  • special characters.

Avoid easily guessable passwords, such as the property name, birth date, or simple combinations.

3. Do not share the main account

One of the most common mistakes is having multiple people use the same main account.

This reduces control over activities conducted and can increase the risk of unauthorized access.

SHINE by LG recommendation

The property administrator should keep the main account exclusively for personal use.

For receptionists, managers, or other team members, use separate accounts and grant only the permissions necessary for their activities.

This way, each user has their own access, and rights can be managed individually.

4. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) if available

Whenever the platform allows, enable two-factor authentication.

This adds an extra layer of protection and makes it much more difficult for unauthorized persons to gain access, even if the password is compromised.

5. Periodically check who has access to the account

As the team changes, it is advisable to check the users who have access to the account.

Remove access for individuals who no longer collaborate with the property and periodically review the level of permissions granted.

6. Protect all devices used

Account security also depends on the security of the devices you connect from.

Ensure that your phone, laptop, or tablet:

  • has an updated operating system;

  • is protected with a password or biometric authentication;

  • uses updated applications and software.

7. Be cautious of phishing attempts

Attackers may send emails or messages that mimic official communications from Booking.com or Airbnb.

Do not enter your login credentials by accessing links received via email or suspicious messages.

Always access the platforms from the official app or by manually typing the address into your browser.

The security of a Booking.com or Airbnb account does not rely on a single measure but rather on a set of good practices applied consistently.

By using a secure connection, periodically updating your password, properly managing access, and being vigilant against fraud attempts, the risk of security incidents can be significantly reduced.

At SHINE by LG, we believe that professional management begins with protecting the property and the information that supports it. By investing a few minutes in account security today, you can avoid problems that could significantly impact tomorrow's operations.
